Proffesional career: From 1989 to 1990, Dr. Mesik served as a Member of Parliament in the Czechoslovak Federal Assembly in Prague. From 1990 to 1991, he served as Chairman of the Green Party in Slovakia and vice-chairman of the Federal Green Party. In 1990, he also became Director of the Department of Social Context within the Federal Ministry for Environment in Prague and remained in that position until 1992.  From 1993 to the 2002, Mr. Mesik was Director of Nadacia Ekopolis – Environmental Partnership for Central Europe – Slovakia (EPCE). In 1998, Dr. Mesik was elected to the Banska Bystrica City Council.

At the beginning of March 2003, Juraj Mesik started work as the World Bank’s Senior Community Foundation Specialist. His two-year assignment is part of a World Bank/Council on Foundations joint initiative to introduce the community foundation concept at the Bank and to explore whether community foundations can be integrated into some of its community-driven development operations in Bank client countries. He worked for the World Bank until 2008 when he returned back to Slovakia. Since then, he works as indepentend consultant and gives lectures on global challanges on University in Olomouc (Czech Republic) and Commenius University in Bratislava.

Activities: Throughout his career, Dr. Mesik has been extensively involved in the third sector in Slovakia. From 1982 to 1992, he served as chairman of the local branch, Ekotrend, of the Slovak Union of Nature and Landscape Protectors (SZOPK), (later member of ZO 6 and ZO 16 in Bratislava and vice president of SZOPK (1990-1992)). From 1994 to1995, he served as a trustee for the Institute for East West Studies in Prague and New York. In 1994, Dr. Mesik became a trustee for the Banska Bystrica Healthy City Community Foundation and continues to serve on the board as its chairman. From 1995 to 1998, he served as a member of the Gremium of the Third Sector (G3S), a board that represents NGOs in Slovakia, and worked as part of the steering committee for the 1996 SOS Third Sector Campaign. From 1996 to 1998, Dr. Mesik served on the Advisory Board of the Community Philanthropy Initiative for the Open Society Fund in Bratislava. From 1996 to 1998, he served as a Board member for the Slovak Academic Information Agency (SAIA) in Bratislava. From 1996 to the present, he has worked on the European Community Philanthropy Initiative with the European Foundation Center in Brussels.  From 1997 to 1998, Dr. Mesik served as a board member for the Slovak Youth Foundation (IYF) and was a facilitator and G3S representative for the Roundtable of Local Government. In 1998, he worked as a member of the steering committee for the OK 98 election campaign.

In 1996, Dr. Mesik was awarded the Eisenhower Exchange Fellowship in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the Salzburg Seminar Fellowship in 1998 and Synergos Senior Fellowship in Global Philanthropy in 2000. Dr. Mesik is also the author of numerous commentaries and analytical articles that appear in daily SME, monthly Obcianska Spolocnost (Civil Society), Non-Profit and other publications.

Language: Dr. Mesik is fluent in Slovak, Czech and English and has an intermediate level knowledge of Russian.

Marital Status: He is married with Olga Pietruchova, one of the Slovak leading women rights activists. He has three sons, Lukas (1997), Juraj (1999) and Richard (2007).
